As we wrap up Q1 very soon, I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind of excitement, challenges, and growth that comes with the start of a new year. For me, the beginning of the year always brings a mix of enthusiasm and pressure—managing client expectations, onboarding new clients, and setting the stage for what’s ahead. As a CEO, this time of year requires a fine balance between keeping things on track and preparing for the unexpected.
One of the biggest challenges is managing expectations. Whether it’s setting goals internally with my team or aligning with clients on deliverables, there’s always a tension between the excitement of a fresh start and the pressure to deliver results right out of the gate. This year, I’ve been focused on refining processes while also ensuring that we’re exceeding expectations. It’s a privilege to serve our clients, but with that privilege comes responsibility—and the need to stay ahead of what’s next.
Setting the Right Goals and Preparing for Challenges
I’ve learned that setting the right goals at the beginning of the year is essential for long-term success. But equally important is being ready for challenges that arise along the way. As a team, we’ve embraced these challenges, taking lessons from last year’s experiences to ensure we stay adaptable and prepared for whatever the year throws at us. The goal is to keep things balanced—ensuring that while we push forward in our professional growth, we also prioritize our well-being and mental health. As the business fluctuates and challenges appear daily, I am working on staying centered and navigating whatever comes.
A Huge Accomplishment: Team Retreat
One of the highlights of Q1 was taking the entire Mekky Media team on a retreat. Not only was it a huge accomplishment for me personally as a leader, but it also allowed the team to bond in a way that solidified our connection and strengthened our sense of unity. The retreat was an opportunity for us to recharge, build deeper relationships, and reset for the busy months ahead. It’s these moments of connection that remind me of the importance of team culture and how essential it is to take time for each other.
Navigating a Heavy News Quarter
Q1 has also been a heavy news quarter, with the media landscape saturated with political stories and other significant events. For our clients, this has meant extra effort on our part to ensure they get the exposure they deserve, even amid the noise. This is a testament to how our team functions in a busy news environment—making sure our clients’ stories still shine through at the appropriate time, despite what’s happening in the world. As PR professionals, we only control so much. We can’t get swept up in the chaos; instead, we must remain focused on the task at hand and continue to produce newsworthy ideas that will put our clients forward in the best light.
Empathy, Emotional Support, and Leading with Care
In a time when emotions are often high, especially with events like the LA fires, I’ve made it a priority to show empathy where we can, especially within our team. I recognize that this type of work can be emotionally taxing, and as a leader, it’s my role to provide emotional support and a steady hand when things feel overwhelming. While the pressure is real, I also know that our team thrives when we support each other through difficult moments. As much as we focus on deliverables, we also need to keep our mental health and emotional well-being in check.
Looking Ahead to the Rest of the Year
As much as Q1 has been intense, I feel set up for success. Having taken some time away to recharge has been invaluable. Rarely ever in my life have I been able to disconnect like I did while taking my daughter to Australia to study abroad. That rejuvenation allows me to come back to work with a fresh perspective, ready to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the coming months. It’s all about finding the right balance—working hard, staying grounded, and remembering to take care of ourselves and each other along the way.
Here’s to a productive, rewarding, and balanced year ahead!
